For Brain Injury Awareness Week this year (19 – 25 August 2024), Mary, one of our participants, was kind enough to share the details of her stroke, and its impact on her life.
“My name is Mary, and four years ago, at the age of 61, I had a stroke. At the time, I was working full-time in a government role and was enjoying an active life with my husband, children, and grandchildren. Suddenly, I went from being highly independent to completely dependent, relying on others for support in every aspect of my life.
Initially, I was connected to the public health system through Barwon Health Rehab. Their dedicated team of Speech, Physiotherapy, and Occupational Therapy professionals worked tirelessly to help me regain as much function as possible. They also guided me through the NDIS application process during my rehabilitation.
My family reached out to Access Your Supports for Plan Management and Support Coordination, and I was fortunate to be allocated Deirdre, who has consistently advocated for me, supported me, and ensured I am surrounded by a quality care team. With Deirdre’s assistance, I was connected with cleaning, gardening, and support workers who have been invaluable in helping me manage day-to-day tasks. Over time, Deirdre also facilitated referrals to community-based therapy supports and introduced me to the Stroke Support Group in East Geelong.
Since my stroke, I’ve had the privilege of participating in clinical trials with University Hospital and serving as a Liaison and Advocate for patients at Barwon Health, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are met.
Thanks to the ongoing efforts of Deirdre and my therapy team, I continue to make progress. I’m not at a standstill – the continued support I receive is crucial in helping me improve. The NDIS has been vital in enabling me to regain as much independence as possible, and I remain committed to this journey of recovery.
These days, I’m cherishing regular time with my grandchildren and working towards returning to the workforce in a part-time capacity.”
