At Access Your Supports (AYS), we believe everyone deserves to feel supported, respected, and empowered. Behaviour Support provides a structured and compassionate pathway to greater confidence, communication, and wellbeing. Our team works closely with individuals and families to build safer environments, stronger relationships, and clearer communication strategies.
This blog explains what Behaviour Support involves under the NDIS, how it works in everyday life, and how AYS creates lasting positive outcomes for people across Geelong, Colac, and Mildura.
What Is Behaviour Support?
Behaviour Support is a person-centred service that helps individuals who display behaviours that may place themselves or others at risk. These behaviours are often a form of communication, especially for individuals who may not use words to express themselves.
Instead of reacting to behaviours, Behaviour Support focuses on understanding their causes. By understanding the ‘why’, we can build strategies that reduce distress and improve well-being.
At AYS, Behaviour Support involves:
- A Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) to identify triggers, patterns, and unmet needs.
- Environmental reviews to assess how home, school, or work settings may impact behaviour.
- Clear, practical plans to replace behaviours of concern with safer communication and coping strategies.
A strong focus on reducing the need for restrictive practices and working toward eliminating them safely over time.
What Makes Behaviour Support Effective?
Behaviour Support focuses on outcomes that matter to the individual. When people feel understood and supported, they are more likely to learn new skills, build stronger relationships, and enjoy more independence in everyday life.
At AYS, we see positive changes such as:
- More effective communication using tools suited to the person’s preferences
- Improved emotional regulation and reduced behaviour of concern expression
- Greater trust between individuals, carers, and support workers
- A higher quality of life through increased participation and connection
- A clear plan to reduce and eventually remove behaviours of concern
Most importantly, every strategy is shaped by the person’s needs, values, and goals. It’s personalised behaviour support that makes a real difference.
What Does a Behaviour Support Plan Include?
Our Behaviour Support Practitioners are registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission and follow the Positive Behaviour Support Capability Framework. They work one-on-one with individuals and their support teams to create a practical, tailored Behaviour Support Plan (BSP).
Each BSP includes:
- An initial assessment of communication style and behavioural patterns
- A full environmental scan to understand the influencing factors
- A written plan with proactive strategies, such as structured routines, sensory supports, and visual aids
- Reactive strategies for carers and teams to respond safely during moments of distress
- A focus on capacity building, helping the person gain skills and confidence over time
- Ongoing reviews to update the plan as needs evolve
We collaborate with others in the person’s life, such as therapists, educators, or doctors, to create a consistent and well-informed support network.
Support Across the Lifespan
Behaviour Support can support children, teens, and adults at any stage of life. The focus remains the same: reduce behaviours of concern, build communication, and improve quality of life.
For children, support often includes emotion coaching, visual communication tools, and safe routines.
For teenagers, Behaviour Support can help with social skills, emotional regulation, and transitions at school.
For adults, it can improve independence, work readiness, or support with relationships and mental health.
Our team can assist with:
- Managing sensory sensitivities
- Creating structured daily routines
- Reducing high-risk behaviours
- Building long-term capacity through consistent support

If a serious incident occurs and a restrictive response is needed to prevent harm, we follow strict guidelines and reporting procedures as outlined by the NDIS Commission.
We take our role in protecting the rights and dignity of participants seriously. Our goal is always to build proactive strategies that eliminate the need for restrictions altogether.
