Celebrating International Volunteer Day 2024

On this International Volunteer Day, we celebrate all the volunteers out there, and the role volunteering has in maintaining a strong community.

For CJ, a participant at Access Your Supports with Down Syndrome, volunteering has been a key step in his journey to employment and in his goal of building a fulfilling career.

In July 2024, CJ began working with Maddi, one of AYS’ Employment Coordinators, by accessing School Leaver Employment Supports under his NDIS plan. Together with his family and care team, they crafted a Support Plan tailored to CJ’s goals and aspirations.

This plan included gaining hands-on experience through volunteering, which is a vital step toward job readiness, for CJ and many other program participants.

CJ volunteers with Feed Me Geelong and PCs FOR KIDS, two Geelong-based not-for-profit organisations. CJ is developing hard and soft skills, from teamwork and communication to practical technical experience. His dedication to helping others shines in his work.

While CJ continues to volunteer, he is also on the lookout for additional transitional work or other volunteer roles to further expand his skill set.

AYS is a proud sponsor and supporter of Volunteering Geelong, an independent not-for-profit organisation committed to enhancing the quality of life in the community, through the promotion and support of volunteering.
